Vaglio Valle de Uco Malbec Aggie 2017
José Lovaglio Balbo is one of the key figures in the Argentinian wine revolution, arguably at the same level as José Zuccardi or Nicolás Catena (Decanter). Balbo is a third generation winemaker and son of Argentine wine pioneer Susanna Balbo of Dominio del Plata.
In 2014 he launched his own micro-winery, Vaglio, here he showcases the unique microclimates of northern Mendoza through terroir-driven wines. His single vineyard wines come from different sub-regions and soil types, all vinified in the same way with minimal intervention and oak contact. Each of Jose's wines represent different stages of his life. With his burning desire to dig deeper and push limits, compounded with his years of experience at his family's winery.
There is tension and structure to the 'Aggie" which is made from 100% Malbec from Capataz, a 52-acre vineyard planted in 2008 in the lower part of the Uco Valley. It's produced in exactly the same as the rest of his wines, where the place is what makes the difference. The soils are calcareous, stony soils of alluvial origin and the vines are farmed sustainably. 'Aggie' is aromatic and floral, clean and precise, with great purity. It also has depth and great tannins and a clean long finish.
