Mauro Molino Barolo Conca 2016
WA96: The top-end wine from Mauro Molino, the 2016 Barolo Conca (that comes wrapped in tissue paper) is a wine of very specific and important aromas. This wine will be remembered for perfumes that really stand out in their unicity, more so than any of the other numerous qualities you might identify. I am taken by the purity of the rose, wild berry, licorice root and camphor ash. Everything comes together with delightful detail and harmony. And the intensity is unforgettable. This release of 3,068 bottles is a beautiful achievement.
VM92: The 2016 Barolo Conca is the most virile and dark of the wines in the range, yet it retains the classic-leaning feel that runs through all these Barolos. Sage, mint, tobacco and dried herbs give the Conca an attractive savory lift. Today, the Conca is a bit reticent. Barolos from Conca, one of the better-known sites in La Morra, tend to be a bit richer in body, but the 2016 Molino is tightly wound at this stage. I would give it a year or two in bottle.
