Hourglass HG III Red Blend Napa Valley 2016
Hourglass is a cult producer comprised of two vineyards at the narrowest part of the Napa Valley between Calistoga and St. Helena. Its unique soil types, microclimates and exposures impart complexity and produce rich yet elegant estate reds. HGIII is a blend of Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 20 months in new and seasoned French oak. Layers of rose, cassis, cedar, and blackberry.
JS93: "This red has a dense center palate and is full bodied yet focused and polished. Spice and berries. Some dried mushrooms, too. Flavorful finish. Drink or hold." - James Suckling
WA92+: "The 2016 Proprietary Red Hourglass H. G. III is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. Deep purple-black, it opens with notions of warm black plums, mulberries and Black Forest cake with touches of fallen leaves, baking spices and hoisin plus a waft of wild sage. Full-bodied with loads of spiced plums flavors on offer in the mouth, it has a plush texture and long, spicy finish." - The Wine Advocate
JD91-93: Showing the quality of this vintage, the 2016 HG III is a big, opulent, incredibly sexy effort that boasts a deep purple color and terrific notes of black cherries, chocolate, dried flowers, and spice. Made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah (that’s the III of HG III), it’s one heck of a red blend and well worth seeking out.
