Domaine des Terres de Velle Volnay Ez Blanches 2015
The story of Domaine des Terres de Velle is rather incredible: in 2009 Sophie and Fabrice were able to create a small domaine from scratch, an accomplishment extremely rare and difficult in a land where inheritance and history dominates the narratives of most other estates. Although Sophie and Fabrice’s estate is comprised primarily of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, their red wine holdings are superb. Their Volnay lieu-dit, Ez Blanches, is on the same line as the Premier Cru vineyards, Clos des Chenes and Caillerets, sharing that chalky, stony soil that marks those wines with incredible minerality.
Domaine des Terres de Velle Volnay Ez Blanches pours an intense medium ruby with great depth of color. There is a beautiful smoky, mineral tinge to the aromas that intertwine with notes of fresh red berries and plum. On the palate the fruit is lively and energetic, framed by firm, dusty tannins that give a round, broad mouthfeel. There is wonderful complexity and balance in the wine between the fruit and earth flavors as well as the subtle but persistent acidity which leads into the prolonged, sublime finish.
