Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant 1996
RP 97: The healthy dark ruby/purple-colored 1996 Romanee-St.-Vivant reveals gorgeous dark currant, black cherry, and spice aromas. It has huge depth and concentration to its massively powerful, refined character. Raspberries, both red and black, plums, spices, as well as herbs can be discerned in its complex flavor profile. It remains youthfully firm, and will require patience. Drink it between 2005 and 2010+.
VM 93-97: Extremely unevolved nose offers a raw fruit quality as well as notes of licorice, oriental spices and an earthy, truffley perfume. Fabulous chewy sweetness in the mouth; vibrant acidity gives this thick, multifaceted wine extraordinary penetration and cut. Wonderfully long, subtle aftertaste. Amazingly complex juice. This should carry a warning label: 'Caution! Extreme Vinosity.'
WS 95: Very floral aromas, elegant and fleeting, with primary flavors of bilberry and violets. An intense red, this builds nicely on the palate to a very long, sweet finish. Better than when tasted in 2006. Domaine Leroy non-blind tasting (6/08). Best from 2013 through 2045.
BH 93: A drop dead gorgeous aromatic profile of clove, anise, hoisin, soy and jasmin and plenty of now largely secondary fruit aromas lead to rich, full, sweet and dense medium full flavors that are supple but detailed on the mid-palate and ultra complex, intense and highly persistent finish. This is already a delicious wine yet there is still some modest future development to come - it should be capable of another 20 years of cellar time, perhaps more. Moreover, while the '96 RSV is not an especially dense wine by the impressive standards of Domaine Leroy, it is an exceptionally dense wine in the context of the vintage.--Allen Meadows
