Champagne R. Geoffroy Champagne Brut Expression
While this prominent grower recently moved to the village of Aÿ, the Geoffroy name is inextricably linked to that of Cumières, where the family has farming roots that date back to the 17th century. Vines average about 20 years of age, with the oldest from 1926, planted to 42% Pinot Noir, 39% Pinot Meunier, and 19% Chardonnay. Brut Expression comes from premier crus in Cumières and Hautvillers and is aged sur latte for 36 months. Sustainable farming.
WS93: Juicy green pear, quince, grapefruit zest and dried apricot fruit flavors mix with an aromatic streak of minerality and lightly chalky acidity in this well-meshed, lively Champagne.
WA91: Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy blends this wine from parcels in Cumieres and Hautvillers, including Pinot Meunier (50 perfecnt) and Pinot Noir with a small addition of Chardonnay. It's the best release of Expression we've tasted in some time, with the kind of pale white flavor of mushrooms and chalk that you might get from a dry Manzanilla, balancing freshness with the oxidative chracter of barrel-aged wines. It's earthy and tense, a powerful evocation of the Marne Valley soils.
VM91: Pale onion skin color. Aromas of fresh pear, lemongrass and lime zest, with a hint of jasmine. Juicy and penetrating, with tangy citrus and orchard fruit and flavors underscored by a note of chalky minerality. Finishes clean and racy, with lingering floral and gingery spice qualities.
