Arietta Red H Block Hudson Vineyards 2013
Arietta, an ultra-premium Napa winery specializing in limited production Bordeaux-style blends, is owned by wine specialist and auctioneer Fritz Hatton, and led by ex-Screaming Eagle winemaker Andy Erickson. This is Cabernet Franc and Merlot, from a single block of the famed Hudson Vineyard. Look for cassis, blueberry, anise, cocoa and fine tannins. Aged 20 months in mostly new French oak.
VM95+: "A deep, powerful wine, the 2013 H Block hits the palate with serious depth and intensity. Sweet red berries, mint, crushed flowers, anise and rose petal open up gradually, but it is the tannin profile of the Franc that really stands out. There is a lot to like here, but readers need to be patient. Today, the 2013 is incredibly aromatic and precise, but the wine's pedigree is likely to take a few years to fully come through. Once again, I was quite taken with Fritz Hatton's Arietta. The wines are made in small quantities and are available only in a few markets, but from a purely qualitative perspective, they are as good as anything being made in Napa Valley today. Sadly, rarely I hear any buzz about Arietta, and that is a shame, as the wines are gorgeous and distinctive. Winemaker Andy Erickson has done a terrific job with these new and upcoming releases." - Vinous Media
