Located in Lujan de Cuyo, the Malbec capital of Argentina, Altos Las Hormigas consistently produces delicious wines at an awesome price point. A perennial resident on Wine Spectator's Best Buy list, this plump red is fruit forward with rounded cherry, plum and raspberry notes. It has a touch of roasted vanilla with good spice, floral aromatics and is well-balanced overall.

WA90+: Their bread-and-butter red 2019 Malbec Clásico wants to show, through an early harvest and an élevage without oak, that not all Malbec from Mendoza is jammy. 2019 was much warmer than 2018, and the grapes developed full flavors like they haven't seen for years. It's mostly grapes from Luján de Cuyo and a small percentage from the Valle de Uco, mostly from their estate vineyards, from parts with limestone in the soils. The hand-harvested grapes fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts, and the wine matured in concrete vats for nine months. It's floral and expressive, clean and varietal, juicy, fruit-driven and very easy to drink. 645,000 bottles produced. They bottled a first lot in October 2020, and the rest will be bottled in the following months.

VM89: The 2019 Malbec Clásico is a 66/33 blend of grapes from Luján de Cuyo and elsewhere in Mendoza and is unaged. Purple in the glass. It has an attractively fragrant nose of fresh plum against a floral backdrop. Juicy and medium bodied, it is nimble in the mouth with a little grip and heightened freshness. A modern take on the Mendoza Malbec.
