I Grepi Greppicante 2006
Bolgheri has a new superstar! I Greppi's vineyards are located in the village of Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri. These vineyards have long been sought after by the Antinori family for their Guado al Tasso and are just around the corner from Sassicaia as well. These are legends in the Super Tuscan category. Bolgheri has spawned a number of world-class wines over the years, but most of those wines sell for over $50 and up to $250. Enter I Greppi's Greppicante 2006.
The I Greppi Winery totals 25 hectares, of which 15 were recently planted with high density vineyards. The principle grape varietals chosen were Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The result is the creation of two great wines, Greppiccante and Greppicaia, produced following the winery’s philosophy of achieving elegance and sheer pleasure. The Greppicante presents elegant and complex aromas of flowers, plum fruit, blackberry and blueberry, in addition to intriguing notes of forest floor and cedar. The palate is full-bodied, yet soft at the same time. This is an elegant and beautiful wine with long, clean finish.
Awarding 91 points, Wine Spectator had this to say about the Greppicante: Shows very pretty aromas of fresh herbs, currant and raspberry. Full-bodied palate, with a very fine tannin structure and a long, caressing finish. Very solid.
In our opinion, this is one of the greatest Super Tuscan values on the planet! Expect the price for these wines to shoot up in the next few years as I Greppi becomes more widely recognized as one of the top producers in Bolgheri. Until then, enjoy this at a ridiculously low price of $23.99 ($20.39 on any 6 or more mix-and-match bottles). This has Wine Spectator Top 100 written all over it. La Massa 'Giorgio Primo' IGT 2003
Dark and powerful with intense aromas of tar, berry and rasins. This is a beautiful, full-bodied Super Tuscan, with loads of fruit and big velvety tannins. What this might arguably lack a bit in finesse, it gives back twofold in perfectly balanced power. Wine Spectator calls this the "best ever" from La Massa. (Wine Spectator, 93 pts.) Compare at $64.99 and up.
